  1. Nice start, but PLEASE drop the annoying initial 'So'. Dropping 'sort of' and 'kind of' would also be an improvement. It's all annoying enough right now, but in a few years it will be plain embarrassing when these fads fade.

  2. I find it interesting how you danced around the infamous "southern strategy" by not calling it implicitly racist, but instead said it was "conservative and traditional"

  3. This would have you believe that the same party that Bush is in is the one that ended slavery. Lets not forget that the parties reversed and what was Democrat is now Republican. You need to tell the whole story..

  4. The Federal Reserve System should have cut short the process of monetary deflation and banking collapse. If the Fed had done that the economic downturn would have been far less severe and much shorter.

  5. I would like to hear more about the laws and changes made during the nadir period that also lead to the changing of the two parties on black rights so the lincoln party of black rights has become the democratic party of now. I also hope to see facts on the size of government, taxes, and debt during the different parties being in the presidency. Such as the stopping of paying down the debt and giving tax breaks for the rich starting with Reagon. Please don't just repeat small and large government and welfare parties but more real fact checking on taxes, welfare for the poor and the rich, civil rights, women's rights, and regulations on big business under both parties.

  6. Let's talk about when slavery was common legal practice in the northern states. Funny how the democrat party always want to leave that out…

  7. Nice video, finally something of real interest, by that I mean somthing a little more Youtube and less university

  8. The Republican party was a spin off the Democrats over several different reasons but among them one of which was slavery. The civil war was fought not over whether slavery would persist or end but rather would there be nation states or a union of nations.

  9. Don't forget that slavery still existed in almost all of those "free states" at the start of the Civil War!

  10. At 5:49 – Must mention that the 1929 market crash would have lasted one year if it wasn't for Hoover doing the same mistakes as Bush – Greenspan and Obama – Bernanke/Yellen did. It wasn't regulation that was needed. The application of Keynesian economics actually prevented any real recovery and caused the Great Depression. In contrast in 1920-1921 there was another market crash but the US government did the exact opposite of a Keynesian solution:
Due to the expansion of Federal Debt during WW1 the US market crashed. But from FY 1919 to 1920, federal spending was slashed from $18.5 billion to $6.4 billion—a 65 percent reduction in one year. The budget was pushed down the next two years as well, to $3.3 billion in FY 1922. On the monetary side, the New York Fed raised its discount rate to a record high 7 percent by June 1920. To be sure, the 1920–1921 depression was painful. The unemployment rate peaked at 11.7 percent in 1921. But it had quickly dropped to 6.7 percent by the following year, and was down to 2.4 percent by 1923. After the depression the United States proceeded to enjoy the “Roaring Twenties,” arguably the most prosperous decade in the country’s history.
Compare that to the 1929 Depression and our 2008 Great Recession that keeps on lingering.

  11. I am a Black man and a republican. Proud to be one. However the party switch is very debatable. Some people said it did not happen some say it did.

  12. When you start attributing the terrible attributes of humanity to abstract concepts separate from the human beings themselves, you allow for humans to absolve & distance themselves from their very, very ugly nature; to be those wolves in sheeps' clothing.

Democrat, Republican, liberal, conservative, socialist, capitalist, fascist, communist, whatever. The common denominator is man. Strom Thurman was a States Rights DEMOCRAT but he died a Republican & guess what he was a bigot through & through to the friggin' end as conceptualize by some folks myself included. Similar things can be said about Robert Byrd & yet Black folks have stood with that man. Screw these labels. They're just smokescreens used to manipulate folks.

And FYI, slavery persisted several years after the U.S. Civil War in some of the border states. Lincoln wasn't some savior to folks who shared my skin tone (source: http://www.ushistory.org/us/34a.asp ). Dude went after slavery in the Confederacy for practical/tactical/strategical reasons, i.e.:

"My paramount object in this struggle is to save the Union, and is not either to save or to destroy slavery. If I could save the Union without freeing any slave I would do it, and if I could save it by freeing all the slaves I would do it; and if I could save it by freeing some and leaving others alone I would also do that. What I do about slavery, and the colored race, I do because I believe it helps to save the Union." -Abraham Lincoln

So I agree with Conservatives who lambast the Democrat label itself but you all can miss me with that 'you should vote Republican because Lincoln was one & he freed you guys & we fought war to end slavery' implying it was for moral reasons when everyone with half a brain should know by now that it was economic/war strategy reasons that led Lincoln down the path he chose. Also, miss me again for suggesting I vote Republican when that party gladly allowed folks like Strom Thurman into the fold. You gotta be kidding right? In the age of the internet & smart phones, ignorance is a choice. Read & choose not to ignore the real deal.

All these rosy portraits painted of these historical figures as if they were paragons of morality & all that jazz. Be real, history is war. Dog eat dog & unfortunately for me, & certain other demographics, my group has been on the business end of the dominant group's war apparatuses for aloooooong time.

"History is a set of lies agreed upon" -Napoleon Bonaparte said that, maybe. Who knows, someone could've lied or misquoted him saying that. The quote still aptly describes what history is & how it will likely continue to be. That is, it has always been written by the victors. Tired of people adding slants to crap though; lionizing folks. We all know most of this stuff, the widely accepted history, is f*ckery of the highest order. Be real or begone. Left wing, right wing, same bird taking crap on me either way. Nothing but skulduggery going on for as far as the eye can see & beyond.

  13. The Republicans were never the racists. All the Racism/Slavery/JimCrow/Segregation came from the Democratic Party and defended by Democrats and opposed by the GOP.

  14. interesting how we never learned about this in school.. all they ever told you was how whites killed the Indians.. whites had slaves.. white people were terrible.. you grow up believing it till you eventually find out.. wtf.. thanks federal education system..

  15. i like how she tries to cover a bigger welfare state with "social progress". like a bigger welfare state is a positive thing. please stop.

  16. Abraham Lincoln repeatedly stated his war was caused by taxes only, and not by slavery, at all.
"My policy sought only to collect the Revenue (a 40 percent federal
sales tax on imports to Southern States under the Morrill Tariff Act of
1861)." reads paragraph 5 of Lincoln's First Message to the U.S.
    Congress, penned July 4, 1861.
"I have no purpose, directly or in-directly, to interfere with the
institution of slavery in the States where it exists.  I believe I have
no lawful right to do so, and I have no inclination to do so,"  Lincoln
said it his first inaugural on March 4 of the same year.
Lincoln did not claim slavery was a reason even in his Emancipation
    Proclamations on Sept. 22, 1862, and Jan. 1, 1863.  Moreover, Lincoln's
proclamations exempted a million slaves under his control from being
freed (including General U.S. Grant's four slaves) and offered the South
three months to return to the Union (pay 40 percent sales tax) and keep
their slaves.  None did.  Lincoln affirmed his only reason for issuing
was:  "as a fit and necessary war measure for suppressing said (tax)
    rebellion."
Khan Academy needs to learn some ACTUAL history.

  17. You didn't call it by name but you did allude to the "Big Switch" in your video. Can you provide a comprehensive list of the individuals that made the switch?

  18. All American Forefathers were Democrats. Those of you that are still racists, and elitists had forefathers that were the Southern Democrats.

  19. The GOP screwed themselves up (esp with Trump), they keep claiming they're mainstream modern educated moderate centrists, when they moved to the right side of the political spectrum & socially conservative morals. You can't have politics mix with religion, funded by big business & promote a racist, sexist, classist, homophobic & xenophobic ideology +

  20. How can you forget Calvin Coolidge? Under his leadership we got the “Roaring Twenties”, one of our most prosperous times in our history! He cut the federal government by 25 percent, yet he gets NO credit for this? Ronald Reagan mirrored many of his ideas and policies from “Silent Cal”.

  21. The "southerns" revolting and separating from the union was the Democrats. Democrats in the north and south fought to expand slavery. Jefferson Davis, the president of the Confederacy was a Democrat.

  22. White supremacist Democrats continued to control many state legislatures even until the 1990's, finally losing to the Republicans after about 2000. The problem that many Republicans have with the DNC is not that it was just "soft on communism," but that their agenda has become a watered down version of Communist Party USA's agenda. In fact, CPUSA has been endorsing the DNC and Democratic presidents since 1988.

  23. WOW, so many lies in such a short video. But then a liberal two-bit rag can't do anything but tell lies and do revisionist history.

  24. you failed to mention that even though the Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Act were signed by Lyndon B Johnson, that they were actually pushed through Congress by the Republicans! Johnson is quoted as saying that by him signing those bills, that he would guarantee the black vote for the Democrats for the next 200 years.

the Democrats actively tried to kill the civil rights legislation whereas the Republicans were pushing for it.

  25. it's not the lack of regulation that caused crash. it was income tax and federal reserve controlling money supply. over regulation caused depression. over regulation and government intervention is why it lasted so long.

  26. The two parties did not switch sides. Liberals, democrats, socialists,
communists and regressives. All claim that it happened, there was no switch.

  27. Incredible. The Democrat slave owners got their slaves back by giving them free stuff. One can't blame the blacks for biting either because of the Democrat enforced segregation laws that prevented blacks from getting jobs. The master still owns the slaves today. So sad.

  28. Noticed the comment section and likes/dislike ratio how republicans and conservative are less tolerant and complaining about Khan's video about the democratic party, calling bias for even dear to make a video about a different ideology than their own. But in this video about the republican party, most democrats and liberals are respectful and quite toward Mr. Khan's view and content.

  29. Way to gloss over the Democrat Woodrow Wilson who, in 8 years presided over the creation of 3 big things, 2 of which are still plaguing the US public: 1. Prohibition (later repealed), the Progressive Income Tax (to replace funding from liquor taxes and fund WWI), and the Federal Reserve (which is neither, but a bank conglomerate that took over Treasury Dept. responsibilities). He also re-segregated the military and federal workforce and helped the KKK keep those Jim Crow laws sticking down south as well as keep the southern politicians Democrat (Republicans and immigrants were being lynched!).

  30. i love this if democrats wanted slavery and republicans didn't doesn't that mean they are good people YES but in modern times people can't remember and see that the democrats used to be bad.

  31. And to 2018 – the timeline needs to be updated – the Demoncrapic party is now the "National Socialist Party" What is short for that? OHHH The NAZI PARTY. COMMMMMMY NAZI LEFT – The Fascist and Racist Party.

  32. How is it that modern conservatism/republicanism has a lot more in common with anti-federalism which was prectically the proto-democratic party?

  33. Fake History. The South was allowed to have slavery by Lincoln. The Civil War was a war to maintain the American Yankee Empire. Lincoln was a blood thirsty tyrant. 1861 is when America decided to become an Empire, not a Republic.

  34. How could the Republicans have been in the north? The northerners had de facto segregation and were extremely racist and bigoted towards blks. Creating nasty laws against blks…also why didn't a whole bunch of blks get into power in the north if Republicans we're controlling it…why did blks get into power in the south? The Democrats were the racist party back then that wanted the West to be all white not the Republicans. Racist whites didn't want to be around Blk people which is why the north was ruled by Democrats with segregation and laws against blks not Republicans. The Constitution is a republican government that had slavery in it…the 13th amendment. After the war white people RECONSTRUCTED the history because The Republican party was commonly known as the Blk Republican party cause blks were heavily involved in creating the Constitution.

  35. How am I JUST hearing this? Wow, did history get rewritten and taught to ALL of us in school? Welcome the "Dept of Education era” I guess! How can we educate others about this?

  36. Well, the federal reserve’s booms and busts actually caused the stock market crash. Which would not exist in a truly free market society.

  37. So basically the civil war was the Republicans vs the Democrats.

Hmmmm, nobody ever seems to want to put it that way.

  38. I wish you could expand more on why the African blacks switched to the democrates. What were they offered that would make them turn their back on the side that helped remove their bonds? I think this is the crucial point. How did the republicans react, did they do something to retaliate on the democrats?

  39. Their position on the IQ test is that there should be no test, scores should be assigned to make the IQ conservative.
