Ciao everyone, here it’s Marchettino and today I couldn’t choose a better place to talk about S2000! As you know, this car is off production since the beginning of 2009 but this year there’s a special recurrence, the 20th anniversary of the S2000! To celebrate the birthday of one of the best sport cars made by Honda, the company decided to showcase a prototype to display at this year’s Tokyo Auto Show! Since the end of production of the S2000, it ain’t the first time Honda create discussion by showing a concept, in fact we have to step back to 2013 to see the Honda S2000 Modulo Climax. Since the begining, this caused lots of rumors and speculations of a potential comeback of the S2000 on the market but we don’t have yet a successor. Lots of people hope for a new S2000 and to be honest, given the current laws against pollution and the way too invasive electronics mandatory by law, I think there can’t be a real successor. Let’s say it, a N/A VTEC redlines at 9150rpm can’t go on production nowadays so those who have one, they keep it tight! Speaking about the exemplar that Honda brought in Tokyo, the spec is truly japanese: Grand Prix White with red interior! To make this prototype, Honda has used an AP1 S2000, so in front we have the 2.0L F20C engine. in case you didn’t know, the S2000 is available also AP2 just for the american and japanese market. What does it mean? Under the hood it has the F22C 2.2L engine. Power and torque are the same but with a bigger engine displacement, it redlines at 8300rpm but the VTEC kickin’ earlier, on the road the 2.2L is more usable but ihmo, it’s such a great joy to push ’till 9150rpm! We can tell Honda did some cosmetic changes, the front bumper is updated, in fact we find a more aggressive bumper with a wider grylle. Honestly, even though this car is 20 years old, even today the shape is timeless, so beautiful! If we keep looking outside, we may see another change, the wheels! Honda has proposed the car with a set of 17″ Advan wheels. The external colour enhances the upgrades, behind we see a new wing painted gloss black. It’s a sober wing I like, I’ve removed mine because it was too ricey, this one shown by Honda is pleasant to look at. Even the side mirrors are painted gloss black, the S2000 was never proposed with the mirrors with a contrast paint. Yet another contrast we may see with the internal part of the headlights, painted gloss black. Another slight change regard the windshield sorround which is slimmer. In terms of look, Honda did slighty changes, here we have also proper upgrades in fact Honda has upgraded the car with a new set of suspensions with stiffer and lower spring. Moving inside, also here I appreciate the design, its semplicity! If you look at the interior and think it was shaped more than 20 years ago, you can tell this car looked far ahead! You can notice the slight changes because being a 20th anniversary, Honda has proposed the 20th Anniversary logo on some features first of all on the radio cover! I keep mine tight because it’s signed by none other than Shigeru Uehara, the chief engineer of the S2K project! The logo can be found also on the wind deflector By looking the interior, the eco-leather and alcantara seats truly stand out! Also there we find the 20th Anniversary logo. Minor changes aside, we can notice the big display on the dashboard. I don’t like it honestly, it ruins the famous simplicity of the S2000 but I think that 20 years later, a proper infotainment display is a must these days. Also in this case, there’s lots of rumors of a potential comeback on the market. One of the most accepted hypotheses is the official sale of the upgrades seen on the prototype, as I already said, are gonna see a 2.0 S2000? I think not, and honestly I hope not because it could potentially be a disappointment like the current NSX, Back in time, the S2000 wasn’t very accessible, it was pricey but still, it was successful thanks to its features and dynamic qualities! I think a modern S2000 won’t be successful like the old one. We can see that with the modern NSX because by looking at the sales figures, it was a flop. Anyway, time will tell! It could be interesting if Honda started to sell upgrades for the S2K. Talking about my project S2K, it’s doing well. Sadly, I haven’t driven it that much lately. in 2019 the car spent more time around workshops rather than the road but with the new year I’m faithful to end the project in a reasonable time and push this VTEC properly! So that’s it, here some updates and soon there will be interesting stuff to come, we spoke also about this interesting S2K! Thoughts?
