James Corden Responds to Bill Maher’s Fat Shaming Take

>>James: IT CERTAINLY IS. NOW I WANT IT TALK TO YOU ABOUT
SOMETHING. LAST WEEK I WAS WATCHING THE
TELEVISION AND BILL MAHER SAT AT A HOST DESK LIKE THIS ONE. HE LOOKED INTO THE CAMERA LIKE I
AM DOING NOW AND HE TALKED ON HIS SHOW ABOUT FAT SHAMING. AND HE ARGUED THAT IT HAD GONE
AWAY AND NEEDED TO MAKE A COMEBACK. TAKE A LOOK.>>BEING FAT ISN’T A BIRTH
DEFECT. NOBODY COMES OUT OF THE WOMB
NEEDING TO BUY TWO SEATS ON THE AIRPLANE. WE HAVE TBON TO THIS WEIRD PLACE
WHERE FAT IS GOOD. IT IS POINTING OUT THAT FAT IS
UNWEALTHY. THAT IS WHAT IS SAD. FAT SHAMING DOESN’T NEED TO END. IT NEEDS TO MAKE A COMEBACK.>>Jame SO I SAT AT HOME AND. I’M WATCHING THIS AND ALL OF I
COULD THINK OF, I WAS LIKE OH MAN, SOMEBODY NEEDS TO SAY
SOMETHING ABOUT THIS. IF ONLY THERE WAS SOMEONE WITH A
PLATFORM WHO KNEW WHAT IT WAS ACTUALLY LIKE TO BE OVERWEIGHT
AND THEN I REALIZED, OH, THAT WILL BE ME. (LAUGHTER)
(CHEERS AND APPLAUSE).>>James: OH NO. NOW, HERE IS THE THING. I ACTUALLY HAVE A LOT IN COMMON
WITH BILL MAHER, I DO. WE BOTH SHOOT OUR SHOWS HERE IN
THE SAME BUILDING. WE BOTH HOST THE SECOND MOST
POPULAR TALK SHOWS ON OUR NETWORK. AND WE BOTH KNOW THAT WE HAVE
QUESTIONABLE CHOICES IN OUR FILM KAER RADIOS, BILL WAS IN A MOVIE
CALL THE KAL I BELL WOMEN IN THE AVOCADO JUNGLE OF DEATH WHICH IS
ABOUT, TRUE, ABOUT AN ALL-FEMALE TRIBE OF CANNIBALISTIC AVOCADO
FARMERS. AND I APPEARED IN THE CLASSIC
FILM THE LESBIAN VAMPIRE KILLERS. WHICH IS ABOUT LESBIAN VAMPIRE
KILLERS. NO, DON’T YOU DARE CLAP IT, NO. IT IS EXACTLY AS BAD AS YOU
THINK IT IS. (LAUGHTER)
I GOT TO SAY, RIGHT, THAT ANY TIME I HAVE MET BILL MAHER IN
PERSON, HE HAS BEEN POG BUT ME SANT AND KIND AND NICE, WHICH IS
WHY I FOUND IT SO SURPRISING THAT HE OR ANYBODY THINKS THAT
FAT SHAMING NEEDS TO MAKE A COME BACK. BECAUSE FAT SHAMING NEVER WENT
ANYWHERE. I MEAN ASK LIT REALLILY ANY FAT
PERSON. WE ARE REMINDED OF IT ALL THE
TIME ON AIRPLANES, ON INSTAGRAM, WHEN SOMEONE LEAVES A PIE ON THE
WINDOW SILL TO COOL AND THEY GIVE US A LOOK LIKE, DON’T,
DON’T YOU DARE. (LAUGHTER)
NOW THERE IS A COMMON AND INSULTING MISCONCEPTION THAT FAT
PEOPLE ARE STUPID AND LAZY AND WE’RE NOT. LIKE WE GET IT. WE KNOW. WE KNOW THAT BEING OVERWEIGHT
ISN’T GOOD FOR US. AND I’VE STRUGGLED MY ENTIRE
LIFE TRYING TO MANAGE MY WEIGHT. AND I SUCK AT IT, RIGHT. I HAVE HAD GOOD DAYS AND BAD
MONTHS. (LAUGHTER)
I’M BASICALLY BEEN OFF AND ON DIETS SINCE AS LONG AS CAN
REMEMBER. AND, WELL, THIS IS HOW IT IS
GOING. RIGHT? BUT WE’RE NOT —
(CHEERS AND APPLAUSE).>>James: HERE’S THE THING. WE’RE NOT ALL AS LUCKY AS BILL
MAHER, YOU SNOW. WE DON’T ALL HAVE A SENSE OF
SUPERYORITY THAT BURNS 35,000 CALORIES A DAY, RIGHT? I KID BECAUSE I LOVE. BILL, I SINCERELY BELIEVE THAT
WHAT YOU THINK YOU ARE OFFERING HERE IS TOUGH LOVE. AND YOU’RE JUST TRYING TO HELP
BY NOT SUGAR COATING REALITY FOR FAT PEOPLE, EVEN THOUGH YOU KNOW
HOW MUCH FAT PEOPLE LOVE SUGAR COATING THINGS. RIGHT? BUT THE TRUTH IS, YOU’RE WORKING
AGAINST YOUR OWN CAUSE. IT’S PROVEN THAT FAT SHAMING
ONLY DOES ONE THING. IT MAKES PEOPLE FEEL ASHAMED AND
SHAME LEADS TO DEPRESSION, ANXIETY AND SELF-DESTRUCTIVE
BEHAVIOR. SELF-DESTRUCTIVE BEHAVIOR LIKE
OVEREATING. WHEN I WATCHED THAT CLIP, I GOT
UP, WALKED TO THE FREEZER AND GRABBED A PINT OF ICE CREAM. (LAUGHTER)
I’M KIDDING, I WAS ALREADY HALFWAY THROUGH THE PINT WHEN I
STARTED WATCHING. BUT BILL MAY HE MADE MEINISH
IT, HE MIGHT HAVE DONE. AND THIS TERM, WE’RE USING THIS
TERM, USING THIS TERM FAT SHAMING. WE HAVE COME UP WITH A NAME FOR
IT LET’S BE HONEST. FAT SHAMING IS JUST BULLYING. THAT IS WHAT ST.
IT’S BULLYING. (CHEERS AND APPLAUSE)
AND BULLYING ONLY MAKES THE PROBLEM WORSE. OKAY? I DON’T THINK STUFF LIKE THIS IS
GOING TO SOLVE THE OBESITY EPIDEMIC.>>IT’S NOT JUST ABOUT BEING
ABLE TO SEE A DOCTOR, IT’S ALSO ABOUT BEING ABLE TO SEE YOUR
[BLEEP]>>James: BELIEVE ME, I CAN
SEE A DICK. (LAUGHTER)
NOW LOOK, NOW LOOK, BILL MAHER MAKES SOME INTERESTING POINTS IF
YOU GO BACK AND WATCH IT ALL. BUT THERE IS A LOT THAT HE GOT
WRONG IN THIS PIECE, INCLUDING MAKING THE CLAIM THAT EUROPE
DOESN’T REALLY HAVE FAT PEOPLE.>>EUROPE DOESN’T LOOK LIKE
THIS, BECAUSE EUROPE’S NOT ONLY EATING FOR TWO.>>James: YOUR HONOR, I WOULD
LIKE TO PRESENT EXHIBIT A. (CHEERS AND APPLAUSE)
NOW I KNOW, I KNOW THAT BRITAIN’S RELATIONSHIP WITH
EUROPE IS STRAINED RIGHT NOW, BUT I LIVED THERE FOR 37 YEARS,
AND TRUST ME, THERE ARE FAT PEOPLE IN EUROPE, MAYBE NOT AS
MANY, AS IN AMERICA. BUT THE REASONS FOR THAT ARE
COMPLEX. IN FACT, THIS ENTIRE ISSUE IS A
LOT MORE COMPLEX THAN HE’S MAKING IT OUT TO BE. NOW BILL IS RIGHT ABOUT ONE
THING. HE REALLY, REALLY IS. THIS IS A HEALTH PROBLEM. IT IS AN ISSUE THAT NEEDS TO BE
DISCUSSED CLEARLY AND HONESTLY. IT’S AN EPIDEMIC AND WHEN YOU
LOOK AT THE NUMBERS, IT IS TERRIFYING. THERE ARE NUMEROUS REASONS WHY
PEOPLE LIVE THEIR LIVES AT AN UNHEALTHY WEIGHT, JUNK FOOD,
PORTION CONTROL, A LACK OF EXERCISE, THESE ARE ALL MAJOR
CONTRIBUTING FACTORS. BUT POVERTY IS ALSO AN ISSUE. A STUDY CONDUCTED BY THE
UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN HEALTH SYSTEM FOUND THAT CHILDHOOD
OBESITY IS DIRECTLY LINKED TO POVERTY. BUT, FUN FACT, IF YOU SHAME
OBESE CHILDREN, WHOLE FOODS WILL GIVE THEM FREE SALADS. LAUGH LAUGH I’M KIDDING, THAT IS
NOT HOW WHOLE FOODS WORKS. SOMETIMES GENETIC PLAYS A ROLE. YOU KNOW, THERE IS A MOLECULAR
GENET TYES NAMED JEFFREY FRIEDMAN WHO DISCOVERED A
HORMONE CALLED LEPTIN. DEFECTS IN THE LEPTIN GENE ARE
LINKED DIRECTLY TO OBESITY, THEY ARE. HERE IS A FUN FACT. IF YOU SHAME THE GENE IT
ACTUALLY FIXES IT SELF, I’M KIDDING, THAT IS NOT HOW SCIENCE
WORKS. A LACK OF SHAME IS NOT THE ISSUE
HERE. IT IS MAKING FUN OF FAT PEOPLE
MADE THEM LOSE WEIGHT THERE WOULD BE NO FAT KIDS IN SCHOOLS
AND I WOULD HAVE A SIX PACK BY NOW, RIGHT? (CHEERS AND APPLAUSE)
UNTIL WE MAKE HALEY FOOD AND HEALTH CARE MORE ACCESSIBLE AND
WE PROPERLY EDUCATE PEOPLE ON NUTRITION AND EXERCISE, MAYBE WE
CAN HOLD BACK ON THE WHOLE CALL FAT PEOPLE– UNTIL THEY LOSE
WEIGHT STRATEGY. I BELIEVE BILL’S HEART IS IN THE
RIGHT PLACE AND I TRULY LIKE THAT HE CARES ABOUT THE
CONDITION OF MY HEA, AND I WILL. I WILL KEEP TRYING. ALL THE TIME, I AM AWARE TODAY
THAT THIS IS GOING TO BE A STRUGGLE THAT I WILL FACE FOR
THE REST OF MY LIFE, RIGHT. SO IN THE MEAN TIME, BILL,
PLEASE HEAR ME WHEN I SAY THIS, WHILE YOU ARE ENCOURAGING PEOPLE
TO THINK ABOUT WHAT GOES INTO THEIR MOUTHS, JUST THINK A
LITTLE HARDER ABOUT WHAT COMES OUT OF YOURS. WE’LL BE RIGHT BACK. (CHEERS AND APPLAUSE)

  1. To everyone trying to defend Mahr here, let me say this. I would assert that EVERY fat person knows at least one person who eats twice as much crap as them, doesnt work our at all, and still maintains a healthy weight. We tend to be envious of these people because they dont face any of the same criticisms overweight people do, even as they scarf down a half a large pizza. These people are often unhealthy as well, but they dont get snide comments from family, or side eyes when they go to the gym. So, no, fat shaming might come from a place of concern occasionally, but even when it does it helps NOTHING.

  2. As a fat guy, tbh it’s my fault. It’s not hard to make the change. It’s just something you have to make a choice. I lost 65 lbs in 3 months. It wasn’t the easiest thing ever, but it wasn’t crazy. If you want to get healthy do it. Also, I should point out gained it all back lol. So I’m fat again. And I don’t think you should shame people, but we shouldn’t encourage people to be ok with being fat.

  3. No you shouldn't bully someone for being fat, but you definitely should not applaud it! Just as you shouldn't applaud smoking.

  4. I wish more people would call Bill Maher out on his bullshit. Not only this… He's also about one Muslim bashing rant away from going full Lou Dobbs.

  5. The underlying cause of being overweight needs to be addressed. The issue about ‘fat shaming’ is, in my opinion, about not making being overweight something to be celebrated. Yes the reasons for obesity are complicated but fact, when I was at school in the 70’s we had a grand total of 2 kids who were overweight. So what changed? I don’t want people bullied. I do think it’s also not helpful to say being overweight is something to be proud of.

  6. Some people are fat not by choice but because of medical condition. Fat shaming should be against the law since it's a form of bullying.

  7. Dear James. I would imagine that inventing hundred new ways of being a victim in order to rationalize your situation, also does not help solving the issue. Can we at least agree that from medical perspective obesity is not exactly "peachy", or does that fall under the umbrella of "medical construct" which at the end is being depicted through loaded and emotionally manipulative term "fat shamming"?

  8. It is definitely bullying. I say the same thing about sexual harassment. The same men who think it's okay to "fat shame" are probably the same ones holding down women against their will for sex. Furthermore, same goes for those who are against gays. To quote Taylor.. "Shade never made anybody less gay". Same goes for judgment on basically any issue except something that harms ANOTHER person. We're all different people with different bodies/skin color/beliefs/preferences. No one has to be wrong! Maybe we're all RIGHT the way we are!

  9. I have a policy: don't point out any imperfection on someone else if they can't fix it in 10 seconds
Like if someone's got acne, don't point it out, but do mention a piece of brocolli in their teeth

  10. The whole "your not fat/obese when you're born" thing kinda pissed me of because when I was born I was overweight, the doctor told my mom that for a new born baby I was above average.

  11. My dad takes medication that causes a lot of weight gain and has been at it for years. Fat shaming is also directly related to ignorance

  12. I’m sorry but I really don’t think Bill Maher’s heart is in the right place at all. He’s nothing but an science illiterate tool who likes to use “common sense” as a way to feel superior to the rest of us.

  13. James absolutely laid the smack on this nails head.

To anyone that needs to hear this:

Get yourself some discipline and determination. You cant always count on motivation, because it isn't always there.

  14. This sheep-like crowd will applause anything. Besides that, Mahr doesnt talk about slightly overweight people like James that understand their problem. He talks about whales that promote heart attacks.

  15. It's funny how people these days on two opposite sides of an issue both completely miss the point of their opposition. Bill Marr sees celebrating obesity as a problem (it is) so sees fat-shaming as the answer (it isn't). James Cordon sees fat-shaming as the problem while completely ignoring the issue of celebrating obesity which was what started this controversy. No one listens to anyone anymore, so the possibility of sensible dialectic is gone, it's all just virtue signalling rubbish.

  16. A LOT OF FAT SHAMING IS GOOD!!
BUNCH OF HIPPOS CLAIMING THEY'RE HEALTHY AND HAPPY GET PUT ON MAG COVERS – IT'S INSANITY!
THERE WOULD BE AN UPROAR IF SKELETON LOOKING CHICKS WOULD BE PROMOTED EVERYWHERE.
    HYPOCRITS!
CORDEN SHUT YOUR MOUTH, LESS FOOD AND LESS WORDS WILL DO YOU GOOD.

  17. James, some of Bill's clip was entirely comedically motivated. And again for the last time, it's a matter of discipline. We are each dealt a uniquely shitty hand in life, but the hand us irrelevant, it's how you play it that matters.

  18. Gross. I get theres no need to shame people for being fat. Like, we already know we're grotesque/not and a lot of us are already ashamed, but then people counter that issue by seeming proud or like its something we should defend, which is pretty bad.
Im pretty overweight myself and i know its shortening my life span and that i should do something about it. So pretending like its not that bad is utterly careless in my opinion, as well as just another case of our culture babying each other into thinking our flaws arent flaws.

Now i DEFINITELY dont think we should fat shame each other, but instead encourage one another to loose the weight and not flinch because someone else disagrees with pure logic (the logic that being overweight and working around it isnt a sane thing to do).

It's not much different than smokers. Its bad for you and shortens your life. It takes effort to eventually break the habit, which doesnt help when people try to act like its no big deal or you should be proud of it.

I also get most people come here to agree or defend Corden, but his opinion of this is so ridiculously childish imo, sorry.

  19. I don’t think Bill was talking about/shaming the marginally obese like James. He was talking about the morbidly obese people who we see now that we didn’t see before.

  20. James love your show! I know this has nothing to do with this show today. I have a question. Are you going to interview Dimash Kudaibergen now that he is coming to New York on a solo concert? Since you were the host of the world’s best? We dears will love that! Thank you!

  21. Saying that Europe doesn't have fat people is bullshit. Like I see overweight people everyday, I myself am one, and I'm Finnish. Fat shaming needs to stop, because feeling ashamed really makes people hurt themselves. Thank you James for spreading your thoughts and telling facts❤️

  22. It sucks that someone as smart as Bill Maher has such lack of nuance and lack of education on the subject of fat and fat shaming. You can be thin and still be unhealthy. You can have some extra pounds and still be healthy and fit. It’s not clear cut. And shaming people isn’t productive or conducive to change.

  23. Junk food, portion control, lack of exercise…. YOU'VE SAID IT RIGHT THERE, YOU STUPID ASS!! These are not mere "contributing factors", they are the primary reason for the morbidly obese society we live in. Why does America have so many more fat people than Europe? BECAUSE THEY EAT MORE AND EXERCISE LESS. They are responsible for their own bad health. DEAL WITH IT. Why is a junkie a junkie? Because he uses the junk. Stop using the junk if you don<t wanna be a junkie. It<s THAT simple, fool, get up off your ass a forget diets. move for fuck sake. YOU;RE NOT A FUCKING VICTIM.

  24. "Until we start making healthy food…"  really?  There is healthy food,  IT'S THE PRODUCE SECTION OF YOUR GROCERY STORE!

  25. James, as a guy who has, is currently, and probably will always struggle the rest of my life with my weight, thank you. Some of the problem stems from thyroid imbalance, and some still comes from a problem with my pituitary, two things which though I can manage medically, still makes it difficult for my body to shed weight. That being said, though overweight I am active. I have a resting heart beat of 55 and last time I had my blood pressure checked I scored a perfect 120/ 80. Not all who are overweight are unhealthy. I've seen you play soccer in the past, so you know what I'm saying. Thank you again for this piece.

  26. If every one thinks been fat it's not pretty, I guess that's not a beauty dictatorship, it's actually a democracy…

  27. I got made fun of most of my childhood and younger years for being too tall and skinny. After my mom passed away three years ago I gained weight from being depressed. I have a small body frame so it doesn't suit me well. Can't count how many people have asked me if I was pregnant, usually it's women! I was wrong when I was skinny and wrong now that I'm "fat" 🙄

  28. I have a problem with his main rebuttal–That it makes people feel ashamed and causes depression.
This is because whether fat or thin, tall or short, anything that is against the norm, everyone has something or the other which makes them different and liable to being made fun of. I may appear to be the average dude, but since I have very flat, straight hair which refuses to go either way while combing, I was still made fun of. And I am totally fine with it. It was something not commonly seen so it's fine to make fun. In the same way, being overweight is also something which is supposed to be against the norm. So it is only natural that someone makes fun.

  29. I think both Bill and James made too many blanket statements. I agree that fat shaming isn’t a good approach to this issue. As a society, though, we should steer ourselves away from over-indulgence. There are people out there who eat in excess, and are obese…not because of depression or genetic makeup, etc. but because they can. And in some cases these people don’t realize the consequences. Nutrition education could do wonders.

  30. the reality of the situation is there are people who are now trying to normalize obesity. Bill Maher is trying to push back on that but it is usually acerbic way he goes farther than he should.

  31. Saying that fat shaming should do a comeback, thats utterly stupid to say. But what we're doing today where we're lifting overweightness, thats a problem. Overweight people should not be ashamed, nor should we try to make them feel ashamed. But we should encourage healthier behavior. Same with people who are way to skinny, or people with mental problems. Don't glorify the problems, but for the love of god, dont shame them. Be supportive of getting better.

  32. All body shaming needs to end. F I hate hearing 'you need to eat more' 'you are going to blow away' etc… etc…. No shaming is ok

  33. Bill Maher and James Corden both have to make their shows funny so I totally can get how they can come off as jerks or condescending when making any point. Maher may have the wrong approach when saying fat shaming needs to come back and Corden may be completely in the right here, but this isn't about feelings and coddling. My own mother and brother are two very obese people and that has never really bothered me until I had become older and started to see the health problems come to fruition. It's honestly painful to see someone in physical pain and ask to go to the hospital and then when you try to bring up that their weight is the problem with their health issues, they act as if you are attacking them and every issue with their weight that they suppress comes right back to the surface. It just ends up being a negative feedback loop where they get upset, eat more and more unhealthy because its "what they like," and then have health problems, get told that they need to do something about their weight, get upset, eat more and etc… See the trend. So I'm going to say the "wrong" thing here and say that Maher actually is a bit more right here than Corden. I'm not saying bullying a fat person is a good thing to do, instead being firm and adamant in telling them that they are leading an unhealthy lifestyle is a good thing to do, even if they hate you for it. A common thing for people to say is that people who are suicidal are selfish because they don't think about the others who care about them. I know this because I have been told this exact thing, multiple times. Well, obesity can be right in that same boat because you're not thinking about other who genuinely care about you… Like your own son.

  34. Well said. And for the people in the back who think he is being applauded by his audience for being fat. You miss the point.

  35. Bill Maher is a douche. I’ve hated him for years. He’s a dick but he’s right. I’m fat and I’m ashamed. We just need to be nicer about it. Fat people still have feelings and we’re probably fat for a reason. Depression. Anxiety. Whatever it is. It’s hard. Teach them. Don’t bully them.

  36. hey psa: if you've never experienced any sort of real fat shaming and you've been thin your entire life no one wants to hear your hot take on fat shaming.

  37. As someone who's been severely underweight and also very overweight in their lives, I have the blessing of seeing both sides of this argument. The only thing 'shaming' has given me is more expensive therapy bills. It never works, it always hurts. it's just a punch in the face. Never do it.

  38. If you're reminded of it constantly, why don't you fucking do something about it then? Being overweight is a choice. And yes you are lazy. Diets don't work. Man if facts don't count anymore, we can'th help you.

  39. If you shame fat people that means you are lacking something personally and you need to compensate for it by shaming someone because you think you are better than them.
Like bill compensating for the fact that I didn't know he wasn't a talk show host till now.

  40. Please look into Gene Expression… There are 5 keys you need to actually acquire a health management skill. Reference to Dr Bergman

  41. You were right, this needed saying! I am overweight (in Europe) as well. He was not nuanced and joking at the expense of..
OK, but too important things! Was it lesbian vampire-killers or lesbian-vampire killers?

  42. James cordon is a multi millionaire if he wanted to lose weight he has every possible thing he could ever want to do that

  43. nah bill maher is right, with the right lifestyle you will lose weight. This just excuses instead of accepting responsibility for your own body

  44. I actually had not seen the other thing and to be completely honest, I didn't think it was such a big deal at first. But James made such a good speech about it it made me think and understand more.
James handled it in such a classy good way, not being mean, not calling names, but explaining in a way that everyone could understand, big respect to James for doing such a good job!

  45. If Jeffrey M. Friedman showed one thing with his finding of leptin is that reducing food intake and increasing energy expenditure works. So yeah, nice pointing to the discovery. Not so nice to use it to obscure what function it has. Come on Corden, you can do so much better.

  46. Bill Mahers got to stop making fun of vulnerable groups and insulting recently dead comic book legends. Honestly he takes himself for to seriously for what his career has amounted to. Youre a stand up comic, not a visionary leader

  47. people are fat because like you a fat man will tell other people that you need to educate fat people and you are still fat its like eating a oily chicken and talking with full mouth about giving you healt care to make you less fat.

  48. You know, James said that shaming is bullying, but it is also could be an advise and it really depends on context.
Shame is not a bad feeling per se, it badness basically depend on your actions towards it.
My weight was around 105 kg for quite some time and at some point I just shamed myself out of it, started to move around more and eat less.
And you know what? It worked. I am 85 kg now and feeling much better then before.
So, I think everyone can use a little rational shame about themselfes.
