IS CELEBRATING A MEANINGFUL MILESTONE AND CBS 2 TELL US ABOUT THE TRANSPLANT SUCCESS STORY MAKING HEADLINES. 50 YEARS AGO TOMMY HOAG KIDNEYS WERE FAILING. HIS ONLY HOPE WAS A TRANSPLANT. HERE AT CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL LOS ANGELES, IT HAD NEVER BEEN DONE BEFORE. THERE ARE A LOT OF NAYSAYERS. REPORTER: DOCTOR FINE WAS UNDETERRED. HE BECAME THE HOSPITALS FIRST KIDNEY TRANSPLANT RECIPIENT. HIS FATHER WAS THE DONOR. IT WAS A FATHER’S LOVE WHO WAS ABLE TO GIVE ME A KIDNEY. MY DAD PASSED AWAY IN 1998, BUT I STILL HAVE HIS KIDNEY. REPORTER: TOMMY HOAG IS NOW THE LONGEST SURVIVING TRANSPLANT PATIENT IN THE U.S. HAVING LIVED 50 YEARS WITH THE SAME KIDNEY. THE FACT THAT I’M HERE TODAY, 50 YEARS AFTER IS AN AMAZING, AMAZING. IT WAS A MILESTONE ONLY HAS DR. IMAGINED. IT WAS A DREAM BUT WE NEVER THOUGHT IT WOULD BE A REALITY. REPORTER: HIS CELEBRATION WAS HELD TODAY WITH HIS DOCTOR BY HIS SIDE. TOMMY IS THE EPITOME OF WHAT IS POSSIBLE. REPORTER: SOMETHING NOT LOST ON GEMMA, THE HOSPITALS MOST RECENT KIDNEY TRANSPLANT PATIENTS. IT’S AMAZING BECAUSE HIS KIDNEYS LASTED 50 YEARS AND THAT COULD BE ME. REPORTER: SHE IS ONLY TWO WEEKS POST OPERATION AND IS ALREADY HOME. BACK IN 1967, HE COULDN’T LEAVE HIS HOSPITAL ROOM FOR SIX MONTHS. GEMMA’S MOTHER, CHARLENE. CHARLENE. IT IS INSPIRING TO SEE WHAT CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL HAS DONE TO PAVE THE WAY FOR MY DAUGHTER.   1. I just passed 33 years this past April. I was transplanted April 10th 1984. Lost both of my kidneys when I was 12 years old. I'm 46 now and all is doing well. I hope this good man has many more years. As for the young girl…. stay positive, and it'll be with you all of your life. Praise God.

  2. God bless all kidney transplant survivors. My mother received her kidney transplant Aug 31, 1975. She will celebrate 43 years this Aug. She is my hero!
