Mad Scientist Birthday Cake | Parents

This mad scientist cake will be a wide and
weird hit at a science theme birthday party or at a creepy Halloween get- together. You
frost two cakes. One becomes the control panel and the other becomes a brain. First, bake
two cake mixes, making one in a 9 x 13 inch pan and one in a 2. 5 quart oven safe bowl.
Use a long serrated knife to level the 9 x 13 inch cake then place it on a flat platter.
Now let’s frost 2 rectangles of white frosting on to the top left of the cake using about
a quarter cup of frosting. The size isn’t critical, but make one approximately 2 inches
x 4 inches and the other about 3 inches x 4 inches. These will become monitor screens.
Next, use black food coloring to tint about 3 quarters of a cup of white frosting to a
steel gray color. Paste food coloring will give you the best depth of color. Carefully
frost the top and sides of the cake with the gray frosting, working around the white squares.
Smooth the frosting with a spatula heated in hot water. Now use a tube of black decorator
icing fitted with a star tip to pipe around the base of the case and then pipe black icing
with a star tip around the top edge of the cake. Let’s use a small tube of black decorator
icing to outline the rectangles. In the larger rectangle, make straight vertical lines of
different lengths. Make the other rectangle look like an EKG pattern. Finish decorating
the cake with candies to make it look like a control panel. Place 3 candy raspberries
next to the EKG as buttons then make 4 rows of 4 coated candies to look like a series
of buttons on the bottom right and then use lifesavers to make 4 wire connectors on the
top right. Now, let’s frost the brain. Use a serrated knife to level the bowl- shaped
cake then place it flat side down on a plate. Use the black decorator icing fitted with
a star tip to pipe a line down the center of the brain to divide it in half. Use black
food coloring to tint a 16- ounce container of white frosting a light gray
then transfer it to a piping bag with a large
tip or you can use a large resealable plastic bag with the corner snipped off. Next, pipe
the frosting on in squiggly lines to resemble a brain. Finally, place the 2 cakes next to
each other on the table then use red shoestring licorice to make connector wires between the
lifesaver knobs and the brain. If you’re making the mad scientist cake for a birthday party,
handles can be added to the control panel. Make a wish!
