Hester C. Jeffrey was an African-American
activist and suffragist. Hester became involved in the Political Equality Club and later appointed
national organizer for the National Association of Colored Women’s Clubs. Hester Jeffrey became
a close colleague of Susan B. Anthony. In time she would be called upon to give a memorable
eulogy at Anthony’s funeral. Her formation of the Hester C. Jeffrey Club helped to raise
funds for young black women to attend classes at the Mechanics Institute – now known as
the Rochester Institute of Technology. Celebrate 2020 Susan B. Anthony and the 19th Amendment.
